Ebook About
The longtime knitter and vintage fashion expert puts a contemporary twist on classic knit babywear in this beautifully photographed pattern book. While working as a vintage clothing dealer, combing through estate sales and eBay listings, longtime knitter Kristen Rengren amassed hundreds of knitting pattern booklets from 1920 through 1960. Now a knitwear designer, Rengren brings us the result of her combined passions in Vintage Baby Knits, a charming collection of more than 40 contemporary updates of timeless baby patterns. Projects range from small, quick-to-knit items like hats, booties, and shrugs to larger, more challenging designs for sweaters, onesies, and dresses, including a lace christening gown. Beautiful photographs capture a bevy of adorable babies and toddlers wearing these knitted treasures. Also included are sidebars on baby fashion and knitting culture in this bygone era, and a complete reference section. Destined to be a classic itself, Vintage Baby Knits promises family heirlooms for 21st-century babies.

Book Vintage Baby Knits: More Than 40 Heirloom Patterns from the 1920s to the 1950s Review :

I loved these knits! If you are knitting for a baby, I definitely recommend this book- you'll have some very classic, stylish options for the babe!I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars, because I really would have appreciated more sizes. I have hve a neice who's about 6 months now, and while I've knitted for her for 6-12 months... I'd like to knit for her as a toddler, and most of these patterns stop at 12 months. But there's a pretty dress that really tempts me!This book also has a lot of context for the knitting patterns- like, a historical view of the whole knitting scene in the covered decades (1920's - 1950s).One thing- these generally use finer yarns and closer knits than many modern patterns. While there a couple that use worsted, most use fingering/sock yarn, in a finer gauge than people might expect. Still, babies are small- and these are all very elegant patterns! And personally, I think the finer gauge works better with such small humans...Very recommended, if you have a baby to knit for- but it's probably a good idea to start the project before the kid is born! and make it for 12 months!
I received this book today and I love it! I love the old patterns, and have books from my grandmother dating back to the 1920's. Some reviewers mentioned that directions in old patterns may be somewhat unclear. I found that with a little work and a little imagination that problem can be overcome. I assume these reviewers probably have not worked with really old patterns. Try them! I'm sure you will find them challenging. I love the history she provides and the materials suggestions she offers. I had to learn from trial and error which materials work best. I, too, knitted soakers for my children--when soakers were unheard of!! I wish I had know about the lanolin treatment she recommends. I believe anyone who enjoys vintage baby clothes and working with vintage patterns would like this book in their library.
